Frequently Asked Questions

How much space does Home Farm take?

You can decide how much space you want to devote to growing. A typical 3 tray shelf is only 24" wide and 11" deep, the size of a small bookshelf.

What is included with a Home Farm?

There are several options available, from the training and book only, to complete packages which include everything you need to grow.

How much time does it take each week?

A typical 3 tray Home Farm will only take about 30 minutes a week, including planting, care, and harvest.

How much salad greens will I get?

A typical 3 shelf unit can produce 5 lbs. of micro greens a month or more, depending on the varieties you choose. At a retail store or farmers' market, this would cost you $200 or more.  Leafy greens produce less, but are a great addition to add interest, and a variety of textures and flavours.

How long do they take to grow?

Your first micro greens crop can be ready to eat in as little as 10 days. Leafy greens like mustard greens take about 30 to 40 days.

Do I need any gardening experience?

Absolutely not. Home Farm was designed to be simple to use and reliable, so that anyone can do it.

Will it make my house dirty?

No. This method of growing is clean, and the soil for each tray is pre-mixed, and fully contained.  You might get a few greens dropping during harvest, but these are easily cleaned up.

Do I need to wash my greens?

For most varieties, no. Your greens will be soil and pesticide free. Sunflower shoots have to be washed to remove seed hulls, but that's about it.

How often do I have to water my greens?

Home Farm comes with an automatic watering system, which only requires that you periodically fill the water reservoir.

Do seeds come with Home Farm?

Yes, for your first planting.  The startup kit includes pre-measured seeds so you don't have to guess how much to plant. After that it's up to you if you want to continue with pre-measured seeds, or bulk seeds.

What's the difference between the enhanced blue spectrum grow lights and bright white LED lights?

Leafy greens and herbs as well as micro greens produce well with the Grow Lights, micro greens alone will produce nicely with the less expensive white lights.

Can I just grow lettuce, and no micro greens?

Yes.  However, micro greens produce much more quickly, providing you with a constant supply of greens.  A mixed planting of both leafy greens like lettuce and micro greens is a good way to get the best of both worlds.

Is Home Farm organic?

Home Farm uses organic soil mix, almost all of the seed is certified organic, and all seed is GMO-free and un-untreated. You could call it 'way beyond' organic, because you know exactly what is going into your food, how it is cared for, and who touches it.

What do I do when I go away or are on vacation?

If you plan on going away for more than a few days, simply skip a planting so that you have no growing trays during that time.

Can I use Home Farm if I have mobility issues, or are in a wheelchair?

Yes. Installation is available to setup your farm, and all growing and harvesting can be done at chair height. Get in touch to discuss if you have any questions.

Do you guarantee perfect results?

No.  Although Home Farm has been extensively tested with great results, and includes detailed step-by step instructions, ultimately your growing success is up to you.

Yes, absolutely.  With 3 grow shelves, you could use one or two for growing greens, and the others for starting seedlings.

Do I have to buy seed and soil from you?

No.  However, the soil I sell is organic, pre-mixed, and pre-measured for convenience and ease of use, and the measured seed selections allow for easy no-guess planting. But you can buy your seed and soil anywhere you like.  References and recommendations for soil & seed are provided in the growing guide.  The goal is to get everyone growing!
