Russian Red: A hardy garlic with incredible flavour perfect for the canadian climate.
We only grow one variety, Russian Red, an heirloom purple stripe hard-neck variety with rich favour, sweet overtones, and great keeping ability.

The story of our garlic
We first purchased our seed stock in 2008 from Glengyle Garlic, a well-known and early purveyor of Russian Red in the Ottawa Valley. The bulbs we first planted were small, but within a few years sized up nicely by planting the largest cloves each year, and with the help of rich organic soil.
Our garlic has always been grown without pesticides of any kind (organic or chemical), and this strain has proven to be extremely resilient to a wide range of growing conditions, from extremely wet to very dry. Cold winters, mild winters, and everything in between.
Plastic mulch has never been used in our garlic production. We only mulch with leaves and hay.
From 2009 until until 2018, our garlic was sold at farmers' markets and through our CSA program in Ottawa and the Seaway Valley. Since then, we have concentrated on improving the quality of our seed stock. 2024 marks the first year that our garlic is once again available for sale.
Over the course of the last 4 years, we have transitioned to a new planting method which involves minimal till and no supplemental fertilizer. We are very happy with the results, and would be happy to discuss your planting and growing strategies.

Carefully cured for long storage life
After harvest, we clean our garlic and cure it for about a month to ensure a long storage life. Hard neck garlics like Russian red can store until the following Spring.

I've been growing garlic for 15 years. I'm passionate about it, and would like to see every person in Canada eating Canadian-grown garlic. Apart from adding so much flavour to your cooking, the health benefits are amazing. I don't know everything about growing garlic, there's always more to learn, but I know what's worked for me. If you have any questions about growing garlic, storage, etc, I'd love to hear from you. Cheers, Jamie.
Let's keep in touch.
