"Every adversity contains within it the seeds of opportunity and growth."
Supermarkets have become very strange places lately.
I used to be one of those people that would pop in several times a week, just to pick up something fresh for dinner.
Not anymore, and I think many people’s habits, including mine, are not likely to go back to the way they were before, even after the crisis is over.
But I also consider myself fortunate, as I have access to some of the freshest food available 24/7. And I also feel great joy in having been able to share that good fortune with many people in the past few months. In February of this year, I launched Home Farm to allow anyone to produce their own greens and fresh herbs, right at home.
One of my greatest joys in the past few weeks has been the photos some of my first customers have sent in of their amazing results.
Julie from Summerstown, who purchased a Home Farm just a couple of weeks ago is already salad-independent.
She writes: “Home Farm works great, and I think it’s so important to become more self-sufficient right now.”

As Julie says, the solution is indeed to become more self-sufficient. There has been a massive increase in garden seed sales in the past month, as more and more people begin planning a summer vegetable garden.
But what about right now? And what about in November when winter returns? What if you live in a condo or apartment?
Over a year ago, I came to the realization that in order for people to have access to high-quality greens year-round at an affordable price, without any risk of contamination, and without all the plastic packaging, the solution is to grow at home.
So I took everything I knew about growing greens organically, and created a system that allows anyone to do just that.
Little did I know how important becoming more self-sufficient would become just a couple of months later.
Right now, with so many people staying at home and being inactive, there is a tremendous risk that unhealthy eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle will contribute to an increase in chronic illness in the coming months and years.
Some tips for eating healthy and keeping off the extra pounds while sheltering in place:
• A generous serving of fresh greens with every meal provides all the micro nutrients you need from vegetables, without all the trips to the supermarket.
• Cut down on the carbs if you are not doing heavy exercise.
• Fresh greens provide fiber and bulk which will help you feel full, and you won’t miss the carbs.
• Only eat high-quality unprocessed proteins. By eliminating the expensive and unhealthy boxed factory-produced foods, you can make room in your food budget for higher quality proteins.
• Stay as active as possible. Set up a home gym, even if it’s just a yoga mat on the floor.

Growing your own greens at home is easy and cost-effective.
A 3 tray Home Farm micro greens system costs as little as $287. That’s only $5.50 a week for one year! Packaged supermarket micro greens cost $5 or more for a measly 75g. Home Farm will pay for itself in a matter of weeks.

I think this crisis might be a turning point, where people begin to focus more locally. What do you think?
If you have any questions, or tips of your own that you would like to share, I would love to hear from you.
Stay safe, happy & healthy,
Jamie
